Course overview
Course description
The story of St George and the Dragon has been depicted throughout the centuries in iconography, in paintings and sculpture, and in literature. He is the patron saint of England, he is celebrated by the Christian Church, and we assign an annual national day to him.
But who was he? Was he English? Why did we adopt him as our patron saint? When did he live (if he lived)? Was he connected to the Crusades? Why was he beatified, and when? What about the dragon – was it real or a symbol for something else? What about the princess? What is the evidence, if any, for the existence of the man, and what is the truth of the legend?
Medieval historian Terry Bloxham will guide us through the man and the myth, separating ‘fact’ from fiction, and exploring:
- the historical evidence for St George.
- the surviving physical evidence for St George.
- the historic environment in which St George lived.
- the development of the legendary St George.
