Course overview
Join us to investigate buildings across the county and discover the stories they tell. From when they were built and why, to what and who they were for, this course takes a selection of historic buildings including houses, shops, public buildings, places of industry and entertainment to start our exploration of the history of Essex people and places. By the end of the course you will have new places to visit and a starting place to investigate a building of your own.
Course description
Each week we will investigate different buildings, their uses and the people connected with them. We will identify styles and features of our buildings, how we can decode and learn from them. We will work from photographs, maps and a range of local history sources and additional material such as newspaper reports, directories and the census. We will bring to life the people who have lived and worked in our selected places and consider what this tells us about the history of Essex.
