Course overview
Course description
A look at war paintings and other depictions of warfare from the 15th to the 21st century. We'll examine the motivations of artists in showing battles and more minor engagements, and who the paintings were commissioned by and for what reasons. We'll also see how there was a subtle shift in attitudes to war in the middle of the 20th century, which meant that art of the First World War was significantly different from that of the Second World War. We'll also see how some war art before the 20th century was created more for complex social reasons, rather than to glorify heroism in battle. And we'll see some paintings depicting the effects of war on "the home front". With examples from Leonardo, David, Ingres, Goya, Picasso, Lady Butler, John and Paul Nash, John Singer Sargent, Henry Moore, and others.
