Course overview

This course will explore the fundamental elements of compelling storytelling, focusing on conflict, plotting and dialogue in drama. Through practical exercises and analysis, students will develop skills to craft engaging narratives, create dynamic characters, and construct intricate plots. A friendly but challenging class suitable for both new writers and more established writers. The course aims to make Learners better writers of drama via the acquisition of a more complete understanding of Story Structure, Effective dialogue and the role of conflict in storytelling. The Tutor has worked professionally as a Drama /Comedy Writer in both Theatre and Local BBC Radio.

Course description

This comprehensive course, delves into the art of writing dramatic narratives, focusing on the essential elements of story development, conflict, plotting and dialogue. Participants will learn to construct engaging stories, create, and resolve conflict, developing intricate plots and write dynamic dialogue. The course combines theoretical insights with practical exercises to enhance both creative and technical writing skills. These will be explored via various in-class exercises and Homework assignments covering the elements that go to make up well-written drama for either Scripts, Novels or Radio Plays.

The course covers:

  • The foundations of storytelling with key components of narrative structure and developing engaging characters and settings.

  • Exploring Conflict in Drama: Types of conflict: internal, external and relational. Techniques for escalating and resolving conflict and analysing conflict in classic and contemporary dramas.

  • Mastering Dialogue; Techniques for writing realistic and purposeful dialogue. Differentiating character voices and using dialogue to reveal character. Dialogue 鈥榮 role in advancing the plot and creating tension.

  • Integrating Elements for Impactful Drama: Synthesising story, conflict, plotting and dialogue.

Hands-on workshops and peer feedback sessions. Strategies for revising and refining dramatic narratives.

By the end of this course, you will be, equipped with tools to create, and manage dramatic conflict effectively.
