Course overview
Course description
What is it about American literature that makes it so much freer, more expansive and (it must be said) less stuffy than Eng. Lit? Perhaps the best way to answer this question is by reading two of America鈥檚 finest novels: Moby Dick, by Herman Melville, and My 脕ntonia, by Willa Cather. This course will also look at other writings and poems by Maya Angelou, Cormac McCarthy, and Anne Tyler. As you read closely with other students, you will be encouraged to notice some of the handy tricks which various writers use in summoning people and places to the page. There will also be an opportunity to explore the links between American writing and other art forms, including film, photography and music.
