Course overview

Knowing how to sign can make your communication more inclusive for everyone you interact with. Build on your skills in British Sign Language to be able to have deeper interactions with deaf people. This BSL course is suitable for you if you need to communicate with deaf people or people with hearing impairments. It can help you in a variety of contexts, for example in a voluntary or community role, or simply through social interactions. This course is aimed at intermediate learners. You will build on your existing BSL skills. If you would like to start from scratch, you can take the beginner’s BSL course.

Course description

This intermediate British Sign Language course covers a variety of topics related to everyday language use. Learn to sign about your family, pets, numbers and colours. Further develop your skill at finger spelling. Continue to expand your awareness of different types of hearing impairment and the issues that affect deaf people.

The 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø prides itself on creating a safe and friendly environment to learn BSL. We’re sure you will feel comfortable practising your skills with the tutor and other members of the group.

When you complete this course, you can progress to higher-level BSL courses. The next course in this series is the Advanced British Sign Language (BSL) course.

If you need to learn BSL for professional reasons, you can study for an accredited qualification. You could take a level 1 award in deaf awareness.

Please be aware that you’ll need access to the internet to take this intermediate British Sign Language course. Your tutor will upload useful materials to Canvas, the 51·çÁ÷¹ÙÍø’s digital learning platform.

Most of our courses are government funded but if you don't qualify or need alternative financial help to access them then let us know.
