Course overview

This time of year, means different things to different people and yet the experience of hope and renewal in dark times is a universal theme. We will share our memories of this time and, as one memory sparks another, we can reflect on them together. These reflections could touch upon the nature of memory, on culture and identity, or on finding hope in difficult times. There is no need to be a good 'story-teller' as the memories shared will be short, snapshots of lives lived. The aim is to be inclusive as possible and accommodate those with some hearing difficulties.

Course description

In this session we will weave our personal memories and our collective reflections on them by thinking out-loud together. From this will emerge recurring themes which arise from the diversity of experiences shared and a recognition of the values we hold in common. Only one person will be able to speak at a time. Each student will share a brief memory, ideally lasting about two to three minutes, and, once all those who want to have shared one memory, will we invite reflections on these. The process will then be repeated. The tutor has his own difficulties with hearing but has found that, by using zoom captions, and encouraging everyone to speak more slowly, it is possible to include many of those who struggle to participate in group conversions. Participants will be requested to ask others to repeat anything that they have not heard or understood once each memory has been shared. There is no requirement to share anything, the aim is simply to enjoy listening to other’s memories. This is one of two sessions (the other is on Thursday 12th December at 2.30pm to 4.30pm) and students are welcome to attend one or both of the sessions.
